AC Business Support Manager, Rachael Page jumps on the treadmill for the Very Special Kids 24 Hour Treadmill Challenge held in July to raise money to support families caring for a child diagnosed with a life threatening condition.

What is the Very Special Kids 24 hour Treadmill Challenge and who does it support?
Very Special Kids is a unique organisation that supports families caring for a child diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.  Following the death of a child families are supported through the bereavement support program. VSK also operate a Very Special Kids House - an eight bed children’s hospice, providing planned and emergency respite and end-of-life care.

Very Special Kids was established in 1985 after two families recognised there was a need to support other families experiencing the loss and grief associated with having a child diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. They depend on the community and fundraising activities for more than $3.3 million of their annual income.  All services are offered free-of-charge to families.

The 24 Hour Treadmill Challenge is held between 9am Friday 12 July and 9am Saturday 13 July in a purpose-built marque on the stunning grounds of Very Special Kids. Teams of up to 48 participant’s tag-team on a treadmill to see what distance they can cover over a 24 hour period.

The 2013 24 Hour Treadmill Challenge exceeded the $250,000 target by raising an incredible $321,000 from this major event which ensures families do not have to face one of life's toughest challenges alone.

What motivated you to join the challenge?
I have previously been involved with Very Special Kids as a volunteer with their Royal Children’s Hospital Visiting Team and wanted to join the VSK Volunteers Team on the treadmill challenge to support their fundraising activities, exert some energy and have fun in the process!

How many kilometres did you and your team run/walk over the 24 hours and how much money did you raise?
Our VSK Volunteer team ran or walked over 350km in the 24 hour period and raised over $5500. Team members could nominate how many blocks of 30 minutes and what time of day/night they wanted to run/walk on the treadmill, once they had registered and committed to raising money.

What was the vibe like during the challenge?
During the 24 hours, there was an incredible amount of energy, enthusiasm, laughter and motivating music from the resident DJ! The vibe was brilliant - from everyone who was participating, the VSK staff, the celebrities who attended to encourage the runners and walkers, the volunteer staff who kept everyone’s spirits up, the entertainers and the generous sponsors who provided food and refreshments all through the day and night to keep energy levels high!

How would you encourage others to participate in the VSK 24 hour Treadmill Challenge?
The Challenge is open to anyone to join. Get together your work mates, friends and families and make a team or join the Accountancy Connect team in the 2014 challenge!

It is also a great way for corporates to fulfil their philanthropic values by committing to a treadmill and entering a team of work colleagues. The treadmill sponsorship entry fee is $5,000 or teams can commit to raise $5,000 via staff fundraising. Benefits for the team and company include;

  • One team treadmill
  • Corporate logo on your team treadmill
  • Corporate logo on your team page on the event website
  • Singlet for up to 48 participants
  • Refreshments and entertainment throughout the event

Celebrities, DJs and massage teams motivate and entertain teams on and off the treadmills throughout the event.

"On the back of a long term relationship with our business spanning more than 10 years, Maree has facilitated the placement of 2 senior people into our finance team over the last 12 months. In doing so, Maree has spent time deeply understanding the companies requirements and in doing so, has shortlisted quality candidates for discussion ensuring time was not wasted interviewing potential candidates clearly not aligned to what we were searching for. We have used the Accountancy Connect team extensively over the last 10 years and will continue to do so in the future."
